Nicole Cyr, the 11th child in a Saint-François, New Brunswick farming family, arrived 45 seconds after midnight on January 1, 1947. The first citizen born under the new Canadian Citizenship Act, which declared that Canadians were no longer British subjects, she was also Canada’s first baby boomer. Cyr, now a retired school teacher, remarked, “I’m proud of that, proud to be Canadian.” If she had been born a day earlier, she would have been British – but she would also have been able to be circumspect about her age.
